As part of Amtrak's "state of good repair" program
initiated by the company's former president David Gunn, a number of Superliner
I sleeping cars (the first generation built circa 1979) were rebuilt to higher
quality standards. Most of these have been deployed for use on the Empire
Builder route, which has undergone several upgrades, but occasionally
they show up elsewhere in the system. These are photos of a rebuilt car that
made it onto the Coast Starlight on Halloween 2006.
The most dramatic improvements are to the rest rooms. The original rest room design was horribly cramped and the fixtures were not very user friendly. The new design is vastly improved in both function and appearance. Lighting is significantly improved, being much cheerier, as you can see in the upper hallway photos. Combined with new wall treatments, which have a cleaner, more refined look, the car feels much more elegant. |
